7 Free Windows Applications On My Computer Right Now
In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving I thought I would share some of the free applications I have on my computer that I use. Some I use from time to time and others every day. But, I think all of them are worth sharing with my readers who may be looking for that special program.
1. Winsnap - A great little application to take screenshots. That’s what I’ve used to take the screenshots in this post (except for the screenshot of the program, couldn’t figure that one out so I used a photo from their site). It has some nice features like drop shadow effects, watermarks, capturing all open windows and selecting only a specific region of the screen.
2. Paint.net - Very nice program if you don’t have any kind of photo editing software like Photoshop or Fireworks. I like the opaque menus and ease of use though it still is a powerful program.
3. Google Earth - This is really a neat program. You can use it to get directions, see a birds-eye view of your neighborhood or explore popular places. I love the historical maps. If you have children this is a great tool to help with geography.
4. Windows Live Writer (WLW) - I use this program to write and publish my blog posts. I really like the ability to copy and paste photos/screenshots directly into the program so that I don’t have to upload them separately like with the online WordPress editor. WLW works with WordPress, Typepad, LiveJournal, Blogger and Windows Live Spaces. It may work with other blogging platforms but those are the ones I know about. It also has quite a few plugins making it easier for me to post to my blog. It is definitely worth checking out if you are using Windows.
5. Winamp - I use this rather than Windows Media Player. I like the way it works works with my music and video files. There are a lot of plugins and skins that have been developed for Winamp. You can see my holiday skin below. Free and paid versions ($19.95). After using Winamp for a couple of months I decided to upgrade to the paid version for faster cd burning.
6. Audacity - A free audio editor and recorder. This is an exceptional piece of free software. I’ve used it to modify some audio files to make ringtones for my cellphone. Can be used on Mac and Linux as well as Windows.
7. New York Times Reader - This is a great way to read the New York Times, better than trying to read it online. It is easy to page through articles and sections using your up/down/left/right arrow keys. No scrolling! You don’t need a subscription but you do need to sign up for a free account.
There are more free applications on my computer but then this post would get even longer than it is. I just wanted to share some of the apps I use fairly often and ones that may be of benefit to you.
