Create A Personal Broadcasting System With Orb MyCasting
Right now I am sitting in a hospital room with my father who is recovering from a bad infection. I brought my computer with me because they have an open wireless network for patients and family. I’m listening to music from my computer using an application called Orb which streams music from my networked hard drive through an Internet connection. Orb is pretty neat and allows me to access media that is on my home network including photos, video and TV (I have a TV tuner attached to my computer. They call it MyCasting.
Not only can I listen to music from my network but I can share playlists so that you can listen to streaming music from my network. Check out my Women Pop playlist that has Nelly Furtano, KT Tunstall, Lily Allen and Regina Spektor.
Orb is free and allows you to stream content from your computer to any web-enabled device. I installed the Orb application on my home computer and selected the folders where my music, photos, video and recorded TV are located. It’s nice that it recognizes my Maxtor Shared Storage drive on my network because that is where I store all of my media.
You can publicly share your music, video and photos
on your blog or on MySpace like I have done with my Women’s Pop playlist.
by setting up a public page with content for anyone to visit as I have done here, http://public.orb.com/ellenm1206.
through links either using an URL address, RSS feed, SMS or instant message.
You can also share your media content privately through email.
There is a lot you can do with Orb and their new version, Orb 2.0 has extras like
Webcam Monitoring so you can access your webcam and use it like a security camera in your home.
Document Explorer where you can access your documents remotely from your home computer.
RSS Feeds where you can add feeds to your MyCasting portal.
Google Gadgets where you can add games, utilities, financial tools, maps, weather, etc. to your media portal.
I’ll be spending time down at my father’s house when he gets home from the hospital and it will be nice to be able to access my media from my home network. Orb gives me the ability to listen to my music from any computer like when I’m down at my dad’s house or at work. It really is a nice convenience.
