Finding Music in Haystack
I’ve been in bed sick for the past 3 days and should be working but instead I found a new music website called Haystack and have been listening to new music. Haystack is in public beta and anyone can join though the community is small but growing. I don’t know if I need to join another music site but I will say in the hour that I have been surfing around the site I have stumbled upon some artists I never heard of including Atomictom (great music to listen to first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee) Jet, The Sharp Things and Logh. My music taste these days tends to be alternative rock and indy just in case you want to check out the profiles of these artists.
Haystack is a way for artists to share their music and music listeners to hear, in most cases, full length songs. That’s a big feature for me. Each artist has a profile page where you can listen to songs, add them to your playlist or contribute music, pictures, videos, reviews and links to collections called “stacks” on any artist page. You can also write a blog and read blogs by other listeners or artists.
There are some quirks with the built in music player. You can keep the music playing by having a separate browser window (or tab in Firefox or IE7) but sometimes I couldn’t get the song I wanted to play unless I closed that window and selected the song again.
I’ve only been browsing the site for a couple of hours now (I keep going back and listening to more music) but I like the look and feel of the site. The artist pages are informative with catchy bios and influences from other artists.
A couple of features I would love to see are:
- The ability to play more than one song at a time with the built in music player from my playlist or another member’s playlist. Right now you have to select or forward through songs in the playlist one at a time. Continuous play would be great.
- I would like to be able to sort my playlist by genre so that I could then play that genre continuously with the music player.
So far those are my only wishes. There may be more as I browse around and really get acquainted with the site.
I did join Haystack and created a profile page. If you join please add me as a friend. I am Whitecity. Haystack seems to have a lot to offer both musicians and music lovers and I plan on keeping up with it as another way to discover new artists and music.
