Get Moving with America on the Move

I’m not much for New Year’s resolutions because I don’t keep up with them.  However, a few days ago I was watching a PBS show called Diet Wars (you can watch the complete program here) and there was a segment on our sedentary lifestyles in the modern age and a movement called America on the Move.  It grabbed my attention because I sit at my computer for hours and then lie on my sofa or bed and watch television, getting very little exercise in a day.  I’m not really into exercising but I do need to move more each day, just get out and walk more.

America on the Move is a simple program developed by Dr. James Hill that encourages people to walk more, at least 2000 steps more a day.  No fancy exercise equipment or fads the only tool needed is a step counter (or you can track by minutes of activity a day).  I ordered a step counter (as a registered member it costs $22.45 and since I ordered two they were $18.63 each) for me and one for my father through their website.  Once I get my step counter then I record my steps online for 3 days without changing my normal activity level.  Then I work on setting my goals, gradually increasing my activity level.

I got a step counter for my father so that I will have an activity partner and also because I want him to be more active as well.  He is almost 80 years old and I know how important it is to keep moving.  I have a chronic muscle condition, fibromyalgia, which makes it important to keep moving but on some days I hurt so much it’s hard to think of exercising.  Well, just moving and walking around is doable, just as it is doable for my father.

So, my New Year’s resolution is to get moving and add at least 2000 steps a day to my normal activity. All I need to do is put the step counter on each day and move.  If I don’t reach my goal, not to fret, there is always another day!

One last thing.  I came across a web 2.0 type website today called WalkingSpree which tracks how much you walk with a pedometer that then connects to your computer via a USB cable.  I was intrigued since I just signed up for America on the Move which is free except for the step counter.  WalkingSpree is $7.95 a month or if you join for a whole year you currently can get a membership for $47.70.

It looks like they offer a lot more bells and whistles and the website design has that web 2.0 feel to it but this time around I am going a bit more low tech.  If anyone tries out WalkingSpree let me know what you think about it.
