New York Times Posts List of 100 Notable Books of the Year
The New York Times has posted their list of the 100 Notable Books of the Year. This list will be published in the print edition of New York Times Book Review on December 3. The list is broken down into fiction and non-fiction books.
It’s nice to have this list to help find some Christmas gifts for friends and family who are avid readers. There are a few books that I think deserve mention, some of which I will be giving as gifts.
- Digging to America
by Anne Tyler. A novel about two couples — one middle-class Americans, the other Iranian Americans – whose lives intersect when each couple adopts a baby girl from Korea. The novel is about the unlikely friendship of these two couples that spans their adoptive daughters’ childhoods.
- Arthur & George
by Julian Barnes. Another novel about intersecting lives. This time between George Edalj, a man falsely accused and imprisoned of criminal behavior, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who hears about George’s case and becomes his advocate.
- Ava Gardner: “Love Is Nothing”
by Lee Server. A biography of a screen legend detailing her marriages, affairs, friendships and movies.
- Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope
by Shin Ebadi, Azadeh Moaveni. An autobiography about Ebadi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The novel looks at her life from pre-revolutionary Iran through to her role as a top defender of human rights in Iran.
- State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III
by Bob Woodward. An indictment of Bush administration’s mishandling of the Iraq War.
Happy reading.
