Here is a great article from the Online Education Database called Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources about the invisible web and links to sites and databases that contain information you may be searching for.
The article points out that Google has about 8 billion pages indexed. While that sounds like a lot the invisible web is estimated to be 500 times bigger. Wow! The invisible web is comprised of sites that search engine crawlers have trouble indexing. Many of these sites are specialized databases that are searchable but are not included when you perform a standard search from a search engine like Google or Yahoo.
Research Beyond Google provides links to these specialized databases broken down by category including Deep Web Search Engines, Art, Books Online, Business, Consumer, Finance & Investing, General Research, Government Data, Law & Politics, Library of Congress, Medical & Health and Science. Just think, you can search through the online database at the Louvre, check out SEC filings at SEC Info, look up copyright records, browse the digital collection at the Library of Congress and finish off your day by researching you latest ailment at the National Institute of Health. Sounds like a great day to me!
Any infomaniac will find this list to be useful for researching topics and finding those sites that generally are hidden from the search engine crawlers that make up part of the invisible web. Kudos to the folks at the Online Education Database for a comprehensive list.
