Review of ProductWiki

I’ve been having fun the last couple of weeks being a member of Product Wiki, a site that states it provides unbiased product information and reviews. This is not a shopping site in the sense of finding the best deal on a product. Instead, it is a product information site that gives you the information needed to determine if a product is right for you. Then you can go and use a shopping comparison search engine like ShopBIG (read my review), PriceGrabber or Shopping.com.

When I first went to the site I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of products already posted, over 13,000. I decided to join the site for and was able to use my OpenID to sign up. I then proceeded to add one of my favorite products of all time, the Logitech Harmony 680 Remote because it using all of my home theater components a breeze. Adding the item was a simple process though I had to come up with an unbiased description of the product.

Once a product is added then you can add a review which I did with the Harmony 680 letting people know how it has makes using my home theater components easier. There is another type of review as well called collaborative review where people share pros and cons and everyone can vote on whether a pro or con is a factor.

I then started to browse products others had added and read the information provided and any reviews. As I went through the reviews I was able to “tap” to say whether I had an item, wanted it and/or love it. You can also tag items to so that you can find them easily in your profile.

There are some nice features included within ProductWiki including

  • featured products and articles on the front page.
  • ability to see what is happening on the site in real time including who has added or edited a product, taps, and posts into forums.
  • news articles added by community members.
  • a user forum (I love forums).
  • ability to add your favorite product lists to your website or blog to act like a wishlist or products you already have.
  • subscribe to RSS feed to get latest featured products or receive a daily email newsletter.

One feature I would love to see is an RSS feed of the what’s happening section to keep me up to date on what is happening on the site. Otherwise, I love ProductWiki. It’s clean interface, ease of adding products, posting reviews, tapping to include in my lists and a great community make it one of my favorite sites I visit daily. If you want solid information about consumer products or have opinions you want to share with others about products you already own then ProductWiki may be just the destination for you.
