Track Weather with the WeatherBug

Living in the Northeast U.S. can mean quick changes in weather.  Take for example last week where on Wednesday it was 70 degrees and spring-like and then on Friday we had a winter nor’ easter where we got about 6? of snow.  Also, the apartment I live in faces south and I get the sun all day making my apartment hot even on the coldest, sunny day.  It can be 0 degrees out and 80 degrees in my apartment making it difficult to gage the weather outside.  There have been days I have gone out in a light coat only to find out that I needed my winter coat, hat and gloves!

Along comes a nice application that my father recommended highly to track weather in real-time called the WeatherBug.  With an always on Internet connection you can have instant access to your local weather if you live in the U.S.  Unfortunately, there is no international version of the program for my Canadian and overseas readers.  If you live in the U.S. this is a nice application to run in your system tray that will show you the current temperature and with a click of your mouse more detailed weather and forecasts.

There is a free, ad-supported version of the WeatherBug and a paid version, WeatherBug Plus, for $19.95.  The free version includes

  live temperature on your taskbar.
local forecast viewable by 7-day, hourly, weekend and forecast map.
  radar maps including Doppler radar.
severe weather alerts directly to your desktop.

The paid version has no ads and a few additional features including digital forecasts and the ability to save up to 6 locations to track weather.  Personally, the free version gives me all that I need and I don’t mind the ads.  It is spyware free just not ad free.  Every once in a while I am asked to pick a sponsor and it brings me to the sponsor’s webpage.  Otherwise the ads show up under the application as seen in the graphic above.  There are no pop-ups or intrusive advertisements.

What’s nice about the WeatherBug is that it picks up the weather from a local weather station, not just a regional one.  I live outside of Boston but the weather in Boston can be much different from where I live, especially when it comes to snow storms.  The WeatherBug has my forecasts linked up to a site in the next town over where the weather is basically the same.

So, even though it feels like summer in my apartment with the sun beaming through my windows I know that it is only 40 degrees out and that I will need more than a sweater on when I go out.  It also looks like we are going to get another storm with freezing rain on Wednesday night into Thursday.  Bummer… We need spring! If you are looking for an easy way to keep track of your local weather then

I highly recommend the WeatherBug.  And, if you don’t mind a few advertisements then the free version is the way to go.
