Transform Photos Into Cartoons With befunky
I’m having too much fun these days playing with applications that take ordinary photos and transforms them in some way like with my previous post about Elf Yourself. Well, today I’ve been playing with befunky which is an application that allows you to take your photographs and transform them into cartoon images, comic style and digital paintings/
To transform your image you use the Cartoonizer tool and follow the simple steps.
- Upload a photo, use a snapshot from your webcam or from a url.
- Crop your photo if necessary.
- Select your sketch detail from low to high and brightness.
- Select color level.
- Warp your cartoon for effect like lengthening nose and chin using brush, very easy.
I had to fool around with different photos to get the lighting adjusted properly, playing around with sketch detail and color level. It’s easy to try different detail and levels and the warp tool a has undo and redo buttons. Here are some photos that I transformed (or befunky did) into cartoon images.

There is another tool to make what are called Uvatars which are like avatars but can be full body images with scenery and accessories. You can upload a photo and for $4.99 they will customize the head to use with their bodies, outfits, scenery and accessories. Here is one I made using one of their faces.

befunky makes it easy to post your new cartoons, digital paintings and comics to popular social networking sites like MySpace, to your blog or email to friends. You can also save your images to your computer for later use.
befunky is still in private beta though I requested an invitation this morning and within a couple of hours had my invite. Now that I am part of the beta I have 100 invites to hand out as well so you can always request one from me by leaving a comment at the end of this post.
Since befunky is still in beta there are some rough edges and options that aren’t available yet. That being said at the present time if you want to take a photo and create a cartoon type image it is pretty easy and fun. I’ve spent a good part of the day creating ones of family to send in email messages. It’s fun!

I would love to be sent the beta version of this. If you have more invitation requests, would you consider offering one to me? Thank you so much for your offer and time.
