Upload and share your music online with MediaMaster
Thanks to a post over at Lifehacker, MediaMaster: Store, share and play your music collection online, I have found another way to share music with friends, family and now my blog readers. While I like Orb which I wrote about in Create a Personal Broadcasting System With Orb MyCasting, the problem I run into is that Orb is accessing my media off my computer network using my Internet connection. This can slow down my Internet access quite a bit if a lot of people are accessing my media.
Along comes MediaMaster which lets you upload your music library (non DRM) into a nice browser-based player that can be shared with others. Currently MediaMaster is free though may turn into a paid service as they add features and iron out any kinks. This makes since because as it stands I can upload my entire music collection if I want for free. Amazing! Of course the amount of time it takes to upload a music collection can be time consuming depending on the size of your collection.
I chose to upload only certain albums since some of the music on my system was downloaded for other people, like Kenny G and Frank Sinatra. Not my type of music. Also, I have my Christmas collection which isn’t appropriate for this time of year.
Uploading music was a breeze. There is an advanced uploader that uses a java app so you can drag and drop items. If you are so inclined you could drop you whole music collection folder into the application and let it do its work overnight. I opted to drag and drop folders for each artist I wanted online and let the application upload overnight while I wasn’t on my computer. By morning my albums were all uploaded. There is also a simple uploader that doesn’t require java but you can only upload one folder at a time.
After you upload music you can create play songs, rate songs, create playlists, create a radio station. add album art and edit metadata for a track or an album. My radio station is located at Ellen’s Radio. You can also embed a widget on your site or blog to share your music. Check out my widget located at the bottom of this blog.
There is some question as to the legality of being able to share a music collection online though MediaMaster only allows music to be streamed over an Internet connection. You cannot download any of the music once it is uploaded. So, you really can’t think of this as a way to backup your music collection since you can’t retrieve the files once stored on MediaMaster.
The benefits of MediaMaster are
- The ability to play your music on any Internet-enabled device. There is no need to have to access your home computer once files are uploaded to MediaMaster.
- Very nice interface and easy to use. The help and FAQs sections are great.
- Share your music by creating a radio station or by embedding a widget on your website or blog.
- Unlimited storage available.
- Easy upload of music with an advanced uploader.
- Free for the time being.
Drawbacks of MediaMaster are
- Upload time for large music collections can be quite long.
- Cannot retrieve music after it’s been uploaded. This would be a nice option so that MediaMaster could be used as a backup of a person’s music collection.
- Future pricing is not available making it risky to upload all of your music and then find you are not willing to pay the asking price.
I still will use Orb MyCasting but probably keep that more for my own use so to free up my Internet connection. In the meantime I will use MediaMaster to share my music with others. So, enjoy the playlists I’ve created and my radio station. Let me know what you think of the service.
