Watch Podcasts With TVTonic – Your Internet Channel

I bought a second computer monitor yesterday so that I can run dual screens on my Dell PC and have been having fun with watching podcasts on TVTonic, a new application that bills itself as Your Internet Channel.  This is a really neat application where you can watch, subscribe and manage video podcasts that are either already including in the application or that can be fetched using RSS feeds.

The downside is that TVTonic only works on Microsoft Windows PC (it does run on Vista but not officially supported yet), either running Windows Media Center or using Internet Explorer.  You can watch podcasts using the Firefox browser if you use the IETab plugin.  Unfortunately, all others are out of luck.  Also, you need a broadband connection like cable or dsl.  So, if you are using a Windows/Vista PC with a broadband connection, read on.

The first thing I did was download TVTonic since I am using Windows Media Center.  Then I subscribed to a few podcasts, each called a channel.  It is very easy to subscribe to channels already contained in TVTonic and they have quite a collection of podcasts already. 

 The podcasts are stored on a local hard drive and I chose to have them stored on a USB drive rather than my main drive.  You can control the amount of space each channel take up using a disk cache setting.  Of course, the more channels you subscribe to, the more disk space that is needed.  And, the disk cache is set individually for each channel making it possible to increase the disk cache for channel content that is updated often and decrease it for content that changes less frequently.

Currently there are 280 channels (podcasts) that you can subscribe to ranging from cartoons to business and comedy to news.  My subscriptions tend to be heavy in technology and news including

 Democracy Now

 DL.TV (for tech fans)

 Scoble Show

 Washington Post

It took time for the all of the channels to download to my hard drive but once the initial download was completed newer content updated seamlessly.  TVTonic downloads in the background but you can disable downloading at any time.  Once you have content downloaded you can watch channels without being connected to the Internet, you just won’t receive new content at that time.

If a podcast you watch is not listed and is available through an RSS feed then you can add it to your TVTonic lineup.  I added a Reuters podcast on technology and Wall St. Journal Tech News.

I really have been enjoying TVTonic.  The quality of the podcasts on Windows Media Center is excellent, much better than if I view channels through Internet Explorer.  And, best of all, it’s free!

Pros:

  1. Easily watch podcasts on your computer.
  2. 280 podcasts to readily choose from.
  3. Ability to add additional podcasts.
  4. Menus and controls are simple to use.
  5. Can watch on or off line.
  6. Is free!

Cons:

  1. Only works on Microsoft Windows XP or Vista.
  2. Can eat up a lot of hard drive space.
  3. Only downloads to local hard drives, not to a networked drive.

If you are using a PC, have a broadband connection and watch podcasts, TVTonic is definitely worth checking out.  I love it!
